The cable car from Zermatt to Furi will be upgraded in summer 2023, after 58 years in service.
First opened in 1963, the old lift is being dismantled and replaced with a modern version.
The new cable car will be larger with an increased capacity of 100 people per cabin, but still with a greater amount of floor space per person.

Base station will also be redesigned
The Schluhmatte base station will also be redesigned to improve the flow of skiers and snowboarders and also include office space for the Zermatt Bergbahnen administration staff.
There will also be more space allocated to luggage. This will become more important when the Alpine Crossing opens, allowing visitors to cross from Cervinia in Italy to Zermatt in Switzerland.
The existing 8-person Matterhorn Express lift will continue to operate throughout the construction period.

Time Line
02 May 2022: Construction of the access road to the cable car, which is required for the demolition work
02 May to mid-June 2022: Construction of the temporary sales point
19 June 2022: The last day of operation for the old cable car
20 June to end-July 2022: Dismantling of the old cable car
